McMaster Children’s Hospital

Posted on 02/10/12 by aaron

McMaster University Medical Centre has changed its name to McMaster Children’s Hospital to reflect its focus to treat only children 17 and under.

The  emergency department treats more than 20,000 children annually and is the regional trauma centre for children. Zip Signs tendered and was awarded the contract for the name change. On November 5, the hospital opened a new, state-of-the-art emergency department. It is child-friendly, with colours, design and distractions all intended to help put children and families at ease during a stressful time.

Zip Signs is pleased and proud of our long standing association with the Hospital and wish them every success as they continue to be a leader in their field.

Signage for Largest IKEA in Canada

Zip Signs is proud to have completed a major signage project at the new IKEA store in Ottawa.   The new store is 427,000 square feet and is the largest in Canada.    Zip Signs built and installed all exterior signs, including one set of IKEA letters that is 23 feet high and 132 feet long.  This large set was built and shipped in pieces and assembled on site during installation.  The remaining three sets of IKEA letters are 11 feet high and 60 feet long.    All 4 sets are mounted on an intricate and proprietary support structure system mounted to the building facade.   In keeping with IKEA’s sustainability and environmental initiatives, all illuminated signs are lit with LED technology.   Zip Signs also built and installed all signage for the 1200 car parking facility.

Zip Employees raise $12,447 for Charity

Over the past 10 weeks, Zip Signs employees have held a Charity Raffle to raise funds for five different charities.    The five charities are City Kidz, Living Rock Ministries, Halton Down Syndrome Association, Cancer Society, and Partnership West Food Bank.    Thanks to many of our generous vendors, associates and friends, we were able to collect many fabulous prizes.    Zip employees were able to surpass our original goal and raise a total of $12,447 of funds internally.     We are very proud of all involved, and excited that our employees are so interested in helping those less fortunate.

Zip Signs Christmas Party

This year, we celebrated with an “Around the World” lunch and a trip to the Curling Rink.    We have many different cultures represented at Zip Signs, and everyone had an opportunity to show their heritage through food.   Many of us had never curled before, so it was quite an entertaining event.

We wish everyone a Merry Christmas

Zip Signs Donates Another Free LED Sign!

Posted on 12/8/11 by aaron

Thanks to a generous donation from Fred Bennink of Zip Signs and the talents of his staff of designers, builders and installers, Smithville Christian High School has been blessed with a powerful and versatile tool that will help them communicate the excitement of what’s happening at the school and help them connect with their community.

With this sign, Smithville Christian High School can inform their community about events at the school, celebrate their accomplishments, and make connections with their neighbours – by highlighting community events like the Christmas Parade, the blood donor clinic, or the Christmas concert.

Bennink said he has donated signs to other Christian schools and churches because it’s hard for organizations like Smithville Christian High School to budget for quality signs.

Bennink said his faith is a major motivator.  “I donate to community and secular organizations as well, but those donations are part of my ‘corporate responsibility,’” he said. “I believe God gives resources to be shared, and there are many supporters of Christian education who are doing the same thing. We all bring different resources to be put to work here on earth, but it’s gratifying to be in such a visible business and to hear how our signs have been a blessing.”

How the City of Mississauga Turned Red Into “Green”

Posted on 10/25/11 by aaron

Zip Signs Ltd & Onland Navigation and Design take on retrofitting Mississauga’s Hershey Centre

In keeping with their green initiatives, the City of Mississauga decided it was time to retrofit one of the city’s most visible landmarks located next to Highway 403. The Hershey Centre which facilitates all types of activities including the St. Michaels Majors hockey club, concerts, and many other events has held a bright red luminance on the Mississauga skyline since its creation in October of 1998. The City of Mississauga in association with Onland Navigation and Design, and Zip Signs took on this project to restore the landmark to its original luster.

The challenge for the team of Onland Navigation and Design (the city’s consultant) and Zip Signs Ltd (the sign manufacturer) was illuminating the iconic “HERSHEY CENTRE” letters with energy-efficient LED’s as it had been for years with neon illumination.

The solution for this illumination was found in taking the original letters down, cleaning the acrylic faces, and fully populating them with high performance red LED modules. Fully populating the letters with LED’s created higher light output than the original neon, all while using a fraction of the energy as compared to the existing system. The value here is created by massive energy savings on a yearly basis, incredible decreases in service costs, as well as the satisfaction of making an effort to become more energy efficient and green.

CONSAC Show a Success!!

We received an incredible response from our national debut of AVL LEDs.

Didn’t get a chance to check us out at the show?

Contact us for an informative demonstration of all our available LED products

Why use LEDs?

LED lighting offers between 70-90% net energy savings when compared to other technologies. (fluorescent, neon etc.)

Life expectancy of LEDs is 50,000 hours. This translates to over five years of consistent lighting and significant labour cost savings from bulb changes and neon refurbishment.

LED lighting is less susceptible to fading when compared to neon, meaning signage will look as good in it’s fifth year as it did when installed.

LEDs are certified to run efficiently between the temperatures of -30° Celsius to 85 ° Celsius.

Fluorescent lamps can fade as much as 50-80% when the temperature dips below freezing. This means that in Canadian climates LEDs will keep your sign lit consistently year round.
